Pelvis & acetabular fracture reconstruction

Fractures of the pelvis and the acetabulum (hip socket) are among the most complex injuries in orthopaedics, usually caused by road traffic accidents or falls from height. Their reconstruction is a recognised sub-specialty — and one of Dr. Srivastava's focused areas of practice.

Why these fractures need a sub-specialist

The pelvis is a three-dimensional ring protecting major blood vessels, nerves, and the bladder and bowel. The acetabulum forms the socket of the hip joint, where accuracy of reconstruction directly determines whether the hip develops arthritis later. Surgical approaches to this region are technically demanding, and outcomes are strongly linked to the precision of the initial fixation.

The window of opportunity

Acetabular fractures are best fixed within the first days after injury, before the fragments begin to unite in the wrong position. Delayed or poorly reduced fractures often lead to painful arthritis needing hip replacement at a young age. Early referral to a surgeon trained in this work matters.

The link to hip replacement expertise

Dr. Srivastava's combined practice of acetabular reconstruction and complex hip replacement covers the full arc of this injury: acute fixation when the fracture is fresh, and complex or post-traumatic hip replacement when patients present late or develop arthritis afterwards.

Can pelvis fractures be treated without surgery?

Some stable fracture patterns heal well without surgery. Unstable or displaced fractures, particularly those involving the hip socket, generally do better with accurate surgical fixation. A CT scan usually settles the question.

How soon after the accident should surgery happen?

Once the patient is stable, most displaced acetabular fractures are ideally fixed within roughly the first week. Late surgery is possible but more difficult, which is why early specialist opinion is valuable.

Will the hip be normal after fixation?

The goal of accurate reconstruction is to restore the joint surface and preserve the natural hip. Outcomes depend on the fracture pattern, the quality of reduction and associated injuries — this is discussed honestly for each individual case.
