Why revision surgery is different

Revision is not a repeat of the first operation. It involves safely removing the old implant, managing bone loss, ruling out or treating infection, and reconstructing the joint with specialised revision implants. It demands specific planning, instrumentation and experience that not every centre maintains.

How your case is evaluated

Assessment typically includes clinical examination, updated X-rays, blood markers for infection and, where needed, joint aspiration or advanced imaging. Only after the cause of failure is identified is a revision plan made — the cause determines the operation.

My knee replacement from years ago has become painful. Does it always need revision?

No. Some painful replacements are managed without surgery once the cause is identified. But persistent pain in a replaced joint always deserves proper evaluation — it should not be ignored.

Is revision surgery riskier than the first replacement?

It is more complex, takes longer and requires specialised implants, so it carries higher demands than primary replacement. This is precisely why it should be done by a surgeon who focuses on revision work.
